Life on the FarmThe unspoiled vistas of the southern Berkshires conceal an extraordinary place to live... and the unprecedented opportunity for the ownership and preservation of American farmland. Here, there is majesty and history — a bridge to the past that forges the promise of a greener, healthier future on a 320-acre certified organic farm on the banks of the Konkapot River.
320 Acres of WonderOwners will enjoy access to all 320 acres of Konkapot Farm Agroforest, and all its natural wonders. The canopied forest with expansive stretches of grass floors adjacent to open fields. The heritage breeds, including Scottish Highland cows, Belted Galloway cows, Soay sheep and an Exmoor pony — all natural grazers that help maintain this serene temple of nature. The future of Konkapot Farm Agroforest will start with accessibility to organic, pasture-fed beef from Jersey steers and a vision to expand into adding lamb from Soay sheep and chicken from Cornish/Rock cross broilers. Laying hens will produce fresh eggs, followed by organic dairy offerings, including milk, ice cream and artisanal, farmstead cheeses. USDA Certified & Meets NOFA StandardsKonkapot Farm Agroforest is USDA certified organic farmland, and ensures the highest organic standards through annual on-farm inspections. The Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA), which has developed the nation's first national standards for organic land care, will annually certify the organic purity of each homesite as well. Konkapot's homesites will be among the first in New England to have earned this unique distinction. Heritage BreedsKonkapot Farm Agroforest is home to a number of heritage breeds. These rare and endangered livestock decrease the need for tractors and heavy equipment to manage the land. These natural, proven, traditional farming practices contribute to healthy soil, clean water and the preservation of wildlife habitats. What follows is a brief introduction to some of your "neighbors" at Konkapot Farm. Belted GallowayThis hardy breed from southwestern Scotland was first imported to North America in the 1940s. Well adapted to grazing on craggy upland pastures, the breed is notable for its distinctive "belt" of color around its midsection. Exmoor PonyNative to the hill country of Exmoor in southwestern England, the Exmoors are believed to be the most primitive of the northern European horse breeds. They are often used as grazers in several environmentally sensitive areas to maintain or increase plant diversity. Today, fewer than 800 Exmoor ponies exist in the world, most of them in England. Gloucestershire Old Spot PigThe Gloucestershire Old Spot is a historic pig breed known for its distinctive white coat with black spots. The breed was developed in the Berkeley Vale of Gloucestershire, England, during the 1800s. Gloucestershire pigs are excellent foragers and grazers. British folklore claims the large black spots are bruises caused by the apples falling onto them as they foraged the orchard floors for food. Scottish HighlandThe shaggy-haired, long-horned Highland is closely associated with the beauty, mystery and romance of the Scottish Highlands. The breed, which was first imported to North America in the 1880s, is notable for its foraging ability, and is used to manage and diversify marginal lands without the negative impact seen with heavier breeds. Soay SheepSoay sheep come from the remote islands of Soay and Hirta, sixty miles off the northwest coast of Scotland. This primitive breed is well known to improve pastures while grazing. Their soft wool is shorn rather than plucked.
